Finding and keeping Christian friends

About a year ago, my husband and I moved to a new house in a new city. We had a huge living room and a large kitchen with a center island— perfect for entertaining. We had a green backyard with a deck and new barbecue pit. It was a dream house and I imagined it filled with friends and laughter and chip crumbs and coffee rings glowing on my tables.

But we didn’t know anyone yet, and I felt lonely. God is so clear about developing biblical friendships and creating a community around us. He encourages us to meet with each other, to pray with each other, to eat with each other, to celebrate with each other. So how do we get to these God-given friendships and how do we continue to strengthen those bonds?

Grace in Friendships

NOTE: This has been a crazy, God-moving, awesome week for me. This post went live at iBelieve.com today and also, another post I wrote earned a feature spot at The High Calling. Sometimes I think my words disappear on the page, and then God shows up and moves. And I’m so grateful. Thanks for reading, friends.

I wasn’t sure I was parked in the right place, but I figured the noisy roll of luggage and the long goodbye hugs and hellos around me were an indication that I was close.

I kept my hazard lights on and watched the sliding doors to the airport in front of me for my best friend. It had been nearly a year since we had been able to see each other, and I was excited for her visit.

The awful fight

No one wants to have coffee with me.

Let me back up. My husband and I moved in January to a new house in a suburb between Dallas and Fort Worth, and I’ve been fighting loneliness. Our families are both hours away and we only know a handful of people in the area.
