BeliefNet: Doing God’s Work

They don’t always nab the top headlines or make the nightly news, but acts of kindness are still around in the world, and they’re a reminder that God is at work. God doesn’t require goodness for salvation, and of course, not everyone is kind because they are believers, but we, as Christians, still need to carry out acts of kindness in this world. We still need acts of sheer love in the world.

For when your heart breaks

I tossed my cell phone on the bed and watched it bounce to the floor of my bedroom. It hadn’t rung or beeped or buzzed in hours, and I was frustrated with watching it.

I was 20 and the guy I had been dating hadn’t called me in a few days. I had been pacing the room and analyzing our last conversation with my roommates. I had waited and waited and finally, I vowed to let him go and move on. Then one Sunday afternoon, I tagged along with my roommate to the bookstore, and my phone buzzed and blinked.

My heart stopped, and I showed the message to my roommate.

Setting the standard

This summer, my husband and I will celebrate our first anniversary, but this isn’t going to be one of those stories telling you the 10 things I learned in my first year. I don’t have five things I’d do differently or three lessons to share with you.

Because the most important part of our first year of marriage, and the best piece of advice I can offer a newlywed isn’t a checklist. It’s a standard. Instead of making sure we hit the right points in our first year, Derek and I set a standard for our marriage in our first year. And we made it high.
